Beyond the Margins: A Literature and Art Magazine
What is Beyond the Margins? What lies just past the edge of the page? Where does the story stop and reality begin? What qualifies as a text, a picture, a painting; as art? When reading or viewing art, do we confine ourselves merely to what exists within the confines of the margins, or do we reach beyond; grasping and culling from all of life’s infinite experiences and the universe’s myriad possibilities? We believe that art and literature are boundless and timeless. They are not something to fit nicely in any box or to be simply summed up by any textbook or dictionary. Beyond the Margins intends to explore new possibilities and add its voice to the always evolving, impalpable definitions of art and literature. Beyond the Margins provides a forum for the best writing being produced in the Connecticut State University System. Utilizing the latest technologies of our times, we intend to be cutting-edge, thought-provoking, superior to other web-zines, and above all, modest.
Apparatus Magazine: a literary journal from the internal machine
Apparatus Magazine (ISSN 1947-2463) is a monthly online literary journal, publishing the best in both poetry and short fiction. We aim to bring readers work that explores the mythos of “man (or woman) vs. machine,” that conjures up words from the inner machine, and more.
Words are the tools that poets and authors use to convey ideas. This journal seeks work that broadens definitions and rethinks traditional boundaries of such words.
Brittle Star -- magazine for poetry and short stories
Brittle Star is an international literary magazine that has been dedicated for a decade to publishing new poetry and short fiction. It has earned a reputation for providing a platform for writers at the beginning of their careers, many of whom have seen their work in print for the first time.
As well as great new poetry and fiction, the magazine has regular and inspiring critical features, including interviews with established writers (David Constantine, Jeremy Hooker, Mimi Khalvati, Galway Kinnell and more), close readings and in-depth articles on literature.
Danis McDermott
Danis McDermott creates intricate and graceful paintings inspired by nature’s fleeting changes. The artist begins with preliminary graphite drawings of pussy willows, sage brush, or a downy feather. She then overlays a delicate encaustic layer on the surface building a sublime and translucent shield that preserves, even freezes, the image of nature for eternity. The use of encaustic, traditionally a technique involving layers of pigment suspended in beeswax originating from ancient Egypt, is considered one of the longest-lasting painting techniques known to mankind. The use of this process in painting only reiterates the intent, and hope, of preserving the fragile nature of nature.
